The Association of Pickleball Players (APP) brought the gold rush back to Sacramento with five thrilling championship matches headlining the 2025 APP Sacramento Open. The world’s first and world’s best pickleball tour returned to Johnson Ranch Pickleball Complex in Sacramento for its fourth year, welcoming players of all ages and skill levels to Northern California’s annual premier pickleball event.

Bobbi Oshiro and Will Howells each won two gold medals, including as mixed pro doubles partners. Chris Haworth earned his 10th career men’s pro singles gold medal, tying the APP Tour’s all-time record in the category, while Sofia Sewing added another women’s pro singles gold to continue an impressive start to her season. Jack Munro earned men’s pro doubles gold alongside Howells, and Susannah Barr paired up with Oshiro for the women’s pro doubles title.

The 2025 APP Sacramento Open also showcased a large field of amateur players from across the country, the AARP Champions and AARP Masters Pro Divisions, and hosted the second round of the 2025 season-long Humana Cup competition for pros 50 and over. Gold medalists from the event earned a USA Pickleball Golden Ticket and secured their rights to pre-register for the 2025 USA Pickleball National Championships.

Men’s Pro Singles

The men’s pro singles final featured seven-time defending champion Chris Haworth taking on a new face, Mariano Yeh, who made his first career APP Tour gold medal match appearance. Yeh gave a good battle, but it wouldn’t be enough as Haworth held on 15-9 and 15-11 to win his tenth career men’s pro singles gold medal and tie the APP Tour’s all-time record in the category.

“I’ve been fortunate to play in a lot of finals, so it’s a little less pressure for me,” said Haworth. “I always want to get off to a good start, and maybe my opponent’s a little bit nervous, so I try to take advantage of it.”

Grayson Goldin took home the men’s pro singles bronze medal.

Women’s Pro Singles

Sofia Sewing’s APP Tour career has gotten off to a blistering start, and Sacramento added the next chapter as she faced first-time finalist Madalina Grigoriu in the women’s pro singles final. Sewing started strong in the opening game, winning 15-9. Grigoriu regrouped and game two went down to the wire, with Sewing ultimately pulling away, 16-14, to clinch her second straight gold medal.

“I was trying to find some weakness in her game, and the angles are such an important part of singles,” Sewing said. “Once I was able to find that and execute, it started to flow better.”

Domenika Turkovic won the women’s pro singles bronze medal in Sacramento.

Mixed Pro Doubles
Top-seeds Will Howells and Bobbi Oshiro took the stage on Championship Court against 2024 APP Sacramento Open finalists Patrick Kawka and Daria Walczak in the mixed pro doubles gold medal match. Howells and Oshiro had not dropped a game together entering the match, and continued their momentum with an 11-7 win in the opening frame. Kawka and Walczak responded well, taking game two convincingly, 11-4. Game three had its share of momentum changes before Howells and Oshiro pulled away, 11-7, to claim their first mixed doubles gold medals as a duo in 2025.

“We like to communicate in between points and in between games,” Oshiro said. “The biggest thing was being able to execute, get up to the kitchen, get into the patterns we love and stay mentally strong out there.”

“It was super windy today, so we focused on making sure we were moving our feet and increasing the margins,” added Howells.

Amanda Hendry and Chris Haworth earned their second-straight mixed pro doubles bronze medals together in Sacramento.

Men’s Pro Doubles
The men’s pro doubles final brought another familiar APP Tour matchup, with top seeds Will Howells and Jack Munro battling two-seeds Erik Lange and Max Manthou for the third tournament in a row. Howells and Munro attacked well in the opening frame, winning 11-6. Following the break, Manthou and Lange showed why they’re a formidable foe as they took game two, 11-8. Game three was knotted at seven points apiece before Howells and Munro took the final four points en route to an 11-7 win, clinching their third men’s pro doubles golds together in 2025.

“We really just trust each other,” Howells said after his second gold medal of the tournament. “We’re having a lot of fun out here and it’s just a blast playing with Jack, he’s such a great talent.”

“The wind was spiraling, so we had to figure out how to place returns” added Munro. “We ended up hitting our serves well and adjusting to that.”

APP U.S. National Team members Clayton Powell and Aidan Schenk took home the bronze medals in men’s pro doubles, marking their first career APP Tour medals.

Women’s Pro Doubles
The championship slate concluded with an elite women’s pro doubles matchup, featuring top seeds Jill Braverman and Megan Fudge against three-seeds Susannah Barr and Bobbi Oshiro. The teams traded dominant wins in the opening two games, with Barr and Oshiro winning 11-4 and Braverman and Fudge winning 11-2. Trailing 8-7 in game three, Barr and Oshiro rallied off four straight points to win 11-8 and bring home the gold.

“Going into the match we wanted to be mentally strong and get into patterns that we favored, and executed from there,” said Oshiro.

“We’re continuing to have a lot of fun and trusting each other,” Barr added. “It’s nice that we can both play both sides of the court, and if we make an error we just laugh it off.”

Emily Cederquist and Yana Newell collected the women’s pro doubles bronze medals.

AARP Champions and Masters Pro Action
In AARP Champions Division (50+) competition in Sacramento, Jennifer Dawson won the women’s singles gold medal and Morgan Shepherd took home men’s singles gold. Lee Whitwell and Jaime Oncins secured the mixed doubles title, and Jose Derisi and Mircea Morariu earned the men’s doubles title. The women’s doubles draw was not completed due to inclement weather.

In AARP Masters Division (60+) action, Anna Shirley took home two gold medals – one in mixed doubles with Scott Moore and one in women’s doubles with Kelly Ojeda. Todd Murphy and Steve Scurfield won men’s doubles gold, Kristin Hickman earned women’s singles gold and Dana Treister secured men’s singles gold.
