Howdy from Dallas!
The APP Tour is right back in action, heading to Dallas this week for its 13th tournament of the season, the 2023 APP Dallas Open, held October 4-8 at the sprawling Oasis Pickleball Club in Rockwall, Texas.
After hosting multiple APP Next Gen Series events in Dallas, this year’s APP Dallas Open marks the first APP Tour stop in Big D. Amateurs of all ages, elite pros and the AARP Champions (50+) and Masters (60+) Divisions will participate in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competition throughout the week.
The APP’s finest will take the stage this week, as defending champions Susannah Barr, Andrei Daescu, Megan Fudge, Hunter Johnson, Rob Nunnery and Parris Todd look to maintain their momentum. APP Tour mainstays Shelby Bates, Ryler DeHeart, Salome Devidze, Vivian Glozman, Yates Johnson, Milan Rane, Dominique Schaefer, Will Sobek, Alix Truong, Lee Whitwell and members of the APP Next Gen National Team all return to action in Dallas.
Fudge was the standout player in Atlanta, earned two golds – including her first women’s pro singles title of 2023 and another women’s pro doubles title alongside Barr. Last time the APP Tour was in Texas (Houston, October 2022), Fudge brought home the women’s pro singles gold, and she’ll look to keep her momentum going in Dallas. Fudge’s 21 total medals lead all APP women’s pros in 2023.
"It’s always fun to come away with a win, and I came away with two wins today,” a victorious Fudge said in Atlanta. “Obviously the confidence is high but the work is never done. I still have a lot to work on in my singles game that I saw today – I didn't quite execute. That's the athlete in me, the competitor in me.”
Fudge continued, “It's not always perfect but I'm excited to get back to work in Dallas. Stay humble. Stay hungry."
Joining Fudge in Dallas will be the other half of Team Fudge-Barr, Susannah Barr, whose eight gold medals in 2023 are the third-most among APP women’s pros.
The APP’s trip to Dallas marks a homecoming for twins Hunter and Yates Johnson, who played Division I college tennis at SMU. Hunter Johnson’s 21 total medals in 2023 are tied for the second-most among APP pros, and Yates Johnson’s 12 total medals are the fourth-most among APP men’s pros this season. The Johnson twins, natives of New Braunfels, TX, have won the men’s pro singles gold medal in nine out of 12 APP tournaments this season.
Also returning to action is Daescu, who leads all APP pros with 23 total medals and 16 gold medals in 2023. The Romania native won men’s pro doubles gold in Atlanta alongside Nunnery, and silver in mixed pro doubles alongside Barr. Nunnery’s 14 total medals are the third-most among APP men’s pros this season. Daescu and Nunnery have won five men’s pro doubles titles together this year, including two in a row, while Daescu and Barr have six mixed pro doubles golds as a team.
Todd leads all APP women’s pros with 14 gold medals, and has two Triple Crowns in 2023. Todd and Hunter Johnson took home gold in mixed pro doubles in Atlanta, and she and Jardim earned silver in women’s pro doubles. Jardim’s nine gold medals are the third-most among APP women’s pros in 2023.
The always-electric Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez took home men’s pro singles gold in Atlanta – his first APP Tour gold medal of the season. The Venezuela native has five total medals in 2023 – one gold, two silvers, and two bronzes, and is set to defend his title in Dallas.
Teaming up for women’s pro doubles once again will be Glozman and Truong, who earned bronze together in Atlanta, marking their fourth consecutive tournament earning a medal. Glozman and Truong come into Dallas with their sights set on gold.
